March 30th is National Fitness Recovery Day | How Can Massage Help Improve Sports Recovery Everyone knows that a good workout leaves you feeling sore the next day - but with a good massage, you could be back in the gym in one or two days ready to give your 110% all over again. Massage has always been a key element of fitness recovery, and for good reason. This March 30th is National Fitness Recovery Day, when we raise awareness for healthy methods of fitness recovery to empower at-home athletes and personal fitness journeys everywhere. At The Wellness Hub, we work with a lot of athletes, both pros and everyday people working hard to stay fit. This is why we are excited to celebrate National Fitness Recovery Day with the people of Jacksonville, FL. Join us as we dive into the important ways to recover from your fitness activities and why massage is one of the best ways to get back on your game with minimal soreness after an intense workout. Let's talk about the benefits of massage therapy and fitness recovery. What Is Fitness Recovery? Fitness recovery is a necessary part of working out. But just why do your muscles get so sore, and why is the recovery cycle so important? It's all about how our bodies are designed to build new muscle. For muscle growth, you need to work out just hard enough that your muscle tissue develops tiny little tears. It's called "Feeling the burn" That's also why muscles can feel swollen and sore after a really good workout. What comes next is a healing process that lasts 1-4 days where your body rebuilds the muscle bigger and stronger each time. Fitness recovery is the process of healing quickly, minimizing inflammation, flushing toxins generated during your workout, and getting ready for your next session as soon as possible - while feeling as little soreness as possible. That's where massage plays an important role in the process, among other useful techniques. Fitness Recovery Techniques Many people who work out discover that a good fitness recovery routine can significantly reduce the soreness and increase their recovery rate so they can start another workout with fewer days of rest. There are several important methods that everyone should know when it comes to fitness recovery that you can do at home.
Of course, one of the most effective ways to speed up your fitness recovery is with a good massage. The Benefits of Massage for Fitness Recovery Massage has been part of fitness recovery since the ancient days of Greece and Rome. The very first athletes in the original Olympics would book a massage after workouts to promote faster fitness recovery and greater muscle development.
Enhance Your Fitness Recovery with Massage If you work out regularly, you don't have to endure days of soreness when you have a good fitness recovery routine. Spring is arguably the most beautiful season of the year. With flowers blooming, leaves sprouting and higher temperatures than we've seen all winter, spring is the season of renewal. This spring, as the earth moves towards rejuvenation, you can also search for "massage near me" and take some steps to be in touch with the changing seasons. Break yourself out of your winter slump and prepare your body for activity with massage therapy in Jacksonville, Florida. If you're feeling sluggish after the winter chill, a massage will get your blood moving and encourage you to take part in outdoor activities. Don't forget that everybody needs healing, no matter what stage of life they are at. A massage can bring you relief from everyday aches and pains as well as give you some deeper, more focused healing, depending on the issues you are trying to address. Why Get a Springtime Massage? If you're wondering if you should book a massage this spring, keep in mind the following benefits of massage therapy in Jacksonville, Florida:
Which Massage Is Best for You? When you do a search for "massage near me," you'll find that different massages are good for different things. Some provide overall stress relief while others target the areas where you feel pain. If you're suffering from certain health conditions, such as lymphedema, sciatica or tendonitis, a massage can help to alleviate your symptoms. Here are some of the massages offered at The Wellness Hub in Jacksonville, Florida: The Classic Massage This is a great, relaxing massage which is good for overall stress relief and relaxation. It also helps alleviate aches and pains caused by our modern, sedentary lifestyle. The aromatherapy used during the massage helps with springtime rejuvenation. Hot stones are also used to deepen the relaxation and detoxify your body, in preparation for spring! The Advanced Massage If you're suffering from chronic pain, then this is a great massage for you because it uses deep tissue trigger point therapy. This type of therapy identifies your trigger points—tight, sensitive areas where the pain is localized—and targets them. Techniques such as cupping therapy, which involves the use of suction to improve circulation, and Reiki, which improves your energy by channeling "universal energy" for your healing, are also used. Clinical massage and neuromuscular massage techniques, which are great for medical conditions such as sciatica, headaches, carpal tunnel and tendonitis, are also part of this type of massage. The Specialty Massage Given that spring is the season when things are growing and there's an outburst of new life, you can sync yourself with the season by getting a fertility massage which focuses on reproductive health and increasing fertility. On the other hand, if you're suffering from lymphedema, fibromyalgia or rheumatoid arthritis, then a lymphatic drainage massage, which helps the body to detoxify itself by moving lymphatic fluid towards the lymph nodes, can revitalize and energize you this spring. Foam rolling is one of the best ways to apply self-massage. It can ease muscle tension, reduce soreness, and enhance your workout performance. Best of all, it's something you can DIY at home or at the gym with very compact supplies. Foam rolling has recently seen a surge in popularity as custom rollers and myofascial release enter the realm of wellness trends. This leads to the natural question: Which is better for fitness recovery: self-massage with foam rollers or a professional massage? The Wellness Hub here in Jacksonville, Florida is a big fan of foam rolling for self-care, and we're here to offer you a detailed comparison to help build your optimal wellness routine. What is Foam Rolling? Foam rolling is the procedure of rolling your muscles over foam cyllinder. You can do this by resting your weight on the foam roller and rolling over the sore or tense muscle. You can use foam rollers for almost every part of the body, from legs and hips to arms and neck. There are also different sizes and types of foam rollers, from simple padded cyllinders to ridged and structured foam for a more kneading self-massage. Myofascial Release Myofascial release is a hot wellness trend that translates to "muscle-fascia release" as myo means "muscle" and "fascia" refers to connective tissue. Foam rolling is categorized as a type of myofascial massage, often paired with other methods like tennis ball pressure point rolling. Foam Rolling Techniques There are two general methods of self-massage using foam rollers.
Benefits of Foam Rolling for Workout Recovery When you exercise to build muscles, you often feel sore and tense. You benefit from activities like stretching out to improve the flexibility of your developing muscles, and from massage to relax the muscle tissue and promote blood flow for faster healing. Foam roller massage can allow you to massage lengths of your muscle that are hard to reach or fully relax if you try to give a self-massage with your hands. Foam rollers are often used on the back of your legs, along your back and sides, and the undersides of your arms.
The Benefits of Traditional Massage for Workout Recovery & Pain Relief Traditional massage has long been celebrated by athletes and those who practice routine exercise. Professional massage therapy can help to work tension out of muscles from head to toe, focusing on knots, pressure points, and lymphatic drainage to optimize physical recovery. Traditional massage provides all the benefits of foam rolling such as promoting blood flow, lymphatic drainage, and addressing hard-to-reach places that might be tense after a workout, but also brings additional benefits to the experience.
Foam Rolling vs Traditional Massage Which is better for workout recovery, foam rolling or traditional massage? The answer is that a routine that includes both will give you the most satisfying results. Foam rolling is an excellent self-care method that you can do before and after every workout to keep your muscles limber and promote rapid recovery. You can self-treat soreness and reduce muscle tension as you grow new muscle tissue with each exercise session. Traditional massage is more beneficial overall, providing full-body muscle tension release and professional recovery care. Of course, you probably exercise more often than you can easily book a full massage. This means that foam rolling on a daily basis combined with a weekly or monthly full-body massage will provide the optimal recovery routine with a dash of luxurious self-care as your reward for staying on your fitness plan. A Beginner's Guide to Different Types of Massage Therapies in Jacksonville, Florida When you want to get a massage, exploring the many different types of massage can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. Like looking at a menu in a new restaurant, you may be uncertain what to choose. Everything sounds good, but which one will give you the best experience? The fact is that there are dozens of different massage techniques and specialties that come from all over the world. Each type of massage provides a different set of benefits, and each person has their own unique needs and preferences. Some like a gentle massage, and some want deep tissue kneading. Some want to combine heat and aromatherapy, and some seek to treat a specific medical condition. We can help with all of these needs at The Wellness Hub in Jacksonville, Florida. The first step is to help you understand the difference between types of massage so you can choose the best starting point for your desired experience. Swedish Massage Swedish massage is known for gentle flowing motions using long movements toward the heart. This promotes good circulation and light lymphatic drainage while helping to relax muscles and the nervous system. Deep circular motions and passive joint movement can also be used to help target specific muscle tension release. Swedish massage is an ideal light massage for those who want to relax and enjoy a low-pressure experience. It is a good place to start for beginners to get a sense for what you prefer in your massage experience. Deep Tissue and Trigger Point Massage Deep tissue massage involves the application of deep finger pressure to target specific muscles and areas of tension or soreness. Deep tissue massage is highly preferred by those who prefer a more intense massage experience or who need to address deeply-held tension, body stress, or areas of persistent muscle pain. Deep tissue massage is often paired with trigger point massage, which focuses on applying pressure to specific trigger points throughout the body. It is typically used to address recovering injuries and areas of chronic muscle pain. Trigger point massage alternates levels of pressure and motions in the trigger area. Some people enjoy deep tissue massage and feel fully relaxed after the therapy, while others find it too intense for everyday massage. It's best for experienced massage-goers and those who find Swedish massage too light. Neuromuscular Massage Neuromuscular massage combines the art of muscle relaxation with nervous system therapy. Your nervous system extends throughout your body, providing sensations and transmitting messages to and from the brain. Neuromuscular massage is often sought out by people with nervous system disorders and symptoms where soothing the nervous system through massage can provide both short-term and long-term relief. Neuromuscular massage may use a combination of general massage, focus areas, and trigger points. It is typically recommended to address specific problems and health conditions. Couples Massage Couples massage is special type of massage service in which two people receive a massage in the same room. It promotes shared relaxation and intimacy where a couple can talk or enjoy luxurious silence together during the massage experience. Couples massage is usually gentle, but each partner can also request their favorite massage techniques if they have a preference. Couples massage services often come with little extras to make the experience more romantic and can be adapted to your unique style on request. One thing to note is the couples massage does not need to just be for romantic partners or spouses. Couples massage can be enjoyed by best friends, sisters, moms and daughters and can be used to celebrate things such as wedding showers, birthdays, mother's day, baby showers and any kind of special celebration, Cupping Therapy Cupping is the process of creating suction using cups as a form of massage therapy. Cupping can promote skin circulation, change the biochemical qualities of your skin, and provide relaxation through unique sensation. Cupping has been lauded since ancient Greece. It may also boost your immune system, promote lymphatic flow, and reduce inflammation. Cupping is part of holistic massage therapy that you can try if you are curious or ascribe to a tradition that has used cupping for centuries. Here at The Wellness Hub in Jacksonville, Florida we almost always combine cupping therapy with massage therapy for the best of both worlds. This combination works magic for releasing tight muscles and improving blood circulation. Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage Manual lymphatic drainage massage applies the principles of Swedish massage with a special focus on promoting the drainage and flow of your lymphatic system. Your lymphatic system carries toxins away from your cells and it is particularly good at carrying lactic acid away from your muscles - easing muscle pain and promoting faster workout or injury recovery. Manual lymphatic drainage massage involves long and soft movements toward your heart. It is a very light and relaxing massage. For those looking for post-surgical recovery in Jacksonville, Florida we have several massage therapists certified in manual lymphatic drainage to assist you with your healing. Hot Stone Massage Hot stone massage applies smooth hot stones to areas of your body. This allows for deep tissue heat penetration, promoting passive relaxation through a combination of permeating heat and gentle pressure. Your therapist may also hold hot stones while providing massage styles similar to Swedish massage motions to work muscles with the benefit of added heat. Many people find hot stone massage to be deeply relaxing. It is also a good massage option for beginners looking for a deeply enjoyable and low-intensity experience. Fun Fact: All of our massages at The Wellness Hub in Jacksonville include a complimentary hot stone option. Make sure to ask your therapist about it and enjoy the comfort and luxury of hot stones during your massage. Prenatal Massage Prenatal massage a therapy designed to ease the discomfort of pregnancy and promote a happier childbirth experience. Those who have experienced pregnancy know that the process can be hard on your back, hips, and feet.
