Sports Massage Therapy: What are the Benefits?

What is Sports Massage Therapy and How Does it Differ From Other Massage Types?

Athletes can achieve their best performance when they achieve physical balance. You want your muscles loose, your tendons flexible, and no lurking knots waiting to hold you back. After an intense workout, pushing lactic acid from your muscles and addressing areas that experienced strain can shorten recovery times and enhance your return performance.

This is why sports massage therapy has been part of athletics since the dawn of our civilization. From the ancient Greeks and the first Olympic Games to modern sports and exercise, sports massage is a time-honored practice known to enhance athletic performance and recovery.

Just what is sports massage, and how does it differ from other massage types? As massage therapy experts, The Wellness Hub is here to shine a light on this ancient and valuable practice.

What is Sports Massage Therapy?

Sports massage therapy uses massage techniques focused on preparing an athlete's muscles and tendons for peak performance, as well as enhancing the speed and quality of workout recovery. Sports massage can also be targeted to assist in healing sports-related injuries.

Many specific massage techniques can be used, from deep tissue and lymphatic drainage to effleurage and even assisted stretching. Each technique is designed to enhance athletic performance by helping muscles warm up, relax, enhance flexibility, provide balance, and remove barriers like knots and tightness. Specific sports massage therapy sessions are tailored to the needs of each athlete based on their routine, recent activity, relevant injuries, and personal preference.

Preparing for Performance

A massage before exercise is the best way to achieve peak performance by ensuring your muscles and tendons are at their best. A massage will address tight and tense areas before you begin exercising. A skilled sports massage therapist will target knots and tightness so that your tissues are fully relaxed, ready to provide strength, balance, and full extension as you pursue your routine.

Injury Prevention

By removing risk factors before exercise, sports massage therapy has been proven to reduce the risk of injury during sports activities. Injuries are often the result of unexpected tension, imbalance, lack of support, or pain while in the midst of intense physical activity. Sports massage therapy prepares the body for unimpeded performance and reduces many of the internal causes of injury.

Workout Recovery

The muscle pain, tension, and fatigue from workout recovery are physical reactions to exercise. Sports massage therapy specializes in treating the root cause of these effects to reduce both the discomfort and duration of recovery after intense exercise.

For example, pushing lactic acid from the muscles and lymphatic drainage reduces muscle pain after recovery. Massage and assisted stretching help muscles to relax and regrow longer and more flexible instead of tightening up during healing. And any imbalance in your workout routine that causes tension or knots can be addressed immediately before systemic problems occur.

Massage also enhances blood flow, which stimulates healing and muscle growth inherently.

Injury Recovery

Athletes who have endured a recent sports-related injury such as a sprain or strain often seek sports massage therapy to accelerate healing and recovery. Sports massage focuses on assisting the strained or torn soft tissue in healing without binding up. First, promoting blood flow around the injured tissue can promote faster healing. Then, massage therapists assist athletes in keeping the healing tissue relaxed and elongated so that injuries do not result in loss of flexibility or mobility during the healing process.

How Sports Massage Therapy Differs from Other Massage

Massage can be used for many purposes. Sports massage therapy focuses on enhancing athletic ability and accelerating recovery. While many techniques are used, the central focus is a personalized massage routine that helps each individual athlete achieve their best performance. Techniques typically center around releasing tension, enhancing flexibility, promoting blood flow, and lymphatic drainage.

Other types of massage have different goals. Typical massage therapy focuses on relaxation, releasing tension, and providing an enjoyable, uplifting experience.  There are types of massage designed to address the nervous system and sensory disorders, massage for musculoskeletal misalignment, massage to assist prenatal and postnatal mothers, and massage that focuses on specific pressure and trigger points.
Each type of massage is unique to its purpose and approach.

Sports massage therapy is an ancient practice since the dawn of professional athleticism in Ancient Greece and Rome. It has evolved to include techniques from all over the world but the central goal is always the same: To help atheletes achieve perfect balance and flexibility before exercise and enhance recovery after exercise.

Massage Therapy that Complements Sports Massage

While sports massage therapy focuses on physical performance and recovery, there are other types of massage that athletes find complementary. For example, massage focused on stress reduction can improve mental clarity and emotional balance when your focus is essential to safe intense exercise and achieving your best results.

  • Relaxation Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Hot Stone Massage
  • Craniosacral Therapy Massage
  • Myofascial Release Massage

Many athletes have a few favorite ways to unwind with massage after exercise as well, such as hot rock therapy or craniosacral massage, or myofascial release. Deep tissue massage is often preferred for athletes who pursue intensive exercise and need tension release through corded muscles. As a rule, if it helps you feel your best before or after exercise, then it is likely beneficial to your overall performance and experience.

Heat treatments such as saunas and hot baths can also help your muscles relax before and after exercise. You may also check out our full body red light therapy treatment, which can help reduce inflammation and further muscle recovery.
