FAQs about Prenatal & Postpartum Massage
Is it safe? When Can I get a prenatal massage?
Prenatal massage is very safe in all three trimesters of pregnancy, according to The American Pregnancy Association. However, if your pregnancy is considered high-risk, we do recommend you ask your doctor first about your specific case, just to ease your mind.
Will I be comfortable during my massage? How will I be positioned?
At The Wellness Hub, we have special pillows and bolsters designed especially to make you comfortable and supported through all stages of pregnancy. You'll even be able to comfortably lie on your stomach during the massage because of our special bolster! If you don't want to use our face-down prenatal pillow, the side-lying position is also popular for prenatal massage, and we have comfy, supportive pillows for that as well.
How often should I have a prenatal massage?
This all depends on what you're experiencing. Usually, the first and third trimesters can be the most uncomfortable, as many physical and hormonal shifts occur during this time. You may find you need to come once a week or every other week during these times, in order to stay balanced. During the second trimester or if the pregnancy - in general - is comfortable, once a month should be enough to help reduce stress and restore balance.
Can massage induce me to go into labor?
Some women seek out massage to help them go into labor. We do not offer "induction massage" at The Wellness Hub. However, we've found massage, reflexology and acupressure in the weeks leading up to a woman's due date can gently and reliably ease things along, because massage naturally releases chemicals like dopamine and oxytocin. We've also found it can ease pain in the low back and sacrum area, which can help to release space for the baby to drop. So no, this isn't an "induction," but a way to naturally support your body as it goes through changes related to labor and delivery...which often results in smoother and faster labor onset.
What are the benefits of massage after giving birth and how soon can I receive massage?
Postnatal/postpartum massage is an excellent therapy to add to a postpartum care plan. The benefits of postpartum massage include the regulation of hormones, the release of happy neurochemicals to help ward off negative mental states, and the easing of physical pain and tension that may occur from giving birth and/or having a Cesarean. Massage can also provide a wonderful form of stress relief for a new mom as well as helping to aid sleep, and thus, energy.
How soon can I receive massage therapy after giving birth?
Our postpartum massage therapists are trained to safely assist you during the postnatal period. Women can receive a postpartum massage at The Wellness Hub as soon as three days after giving birth vaginally. For cesarean births, you are welcome to come in when you are comfortable. For most women, this is typically 1-2 weeks after a cesarean birth.
- Hormone regulation - which can benefit mood challenges during and after pregnancy because stress hormones are reduced and feel-good brain chemicals are released
- Reduction in swelling/edema
- Better Sleep
- Reduction in stress and anxiety
- Ease sciatic nerve pain - a common occurrence, especially in the third trimester
- Improvement for other joint and muscle pain such as carpal tunnel syndrome -especially helpful when medications need to be reduced or avoided due to pregnancy
- Improvement in headaches due to hormonal regulation and stress/tension reduction
