Cupping is a therapy that provides myofascial release and decompression of soft tissue in order to heal pain and restore function.
Cupping therapy comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine and has also been practiced all over the world for thousands of years. Recently, especially since the 2016 Olympics when Michael Phelps (and other athletes) famously sported cupping marks, it has become a popular pain relief and athletic performance-enhancing technique in the United States.

FAQs about Cupping Therapy in Jacksonville, Florida
Will there be marks?
Cupping usually leaves marks, but not always. The marks are called petechia and they are from minor bleeding under the skin caused by the therapeutic effect of cupping. In Chinese Medicine, when we see the marks it is considered a sign that "stagnation" has been released, which is a good thing, as stagnation in Chinese Medicine causes pain and dysfunction. However, some people do not get the marks and that doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't working, as that person may not have as much stagnation.
When will the marks go away?
The marks from cupping usually last anywhere from 1-2 days or up to 7-10 days.
Will I be sore afterward?
Just like with a deep tissue massage, cupping reaches deep layers of fascia and muscle fibers. This can sometimes cause some soreness after the session. We recommend applying topical arnica, staying very hydrated before and after the session, and taking an Epsom salt bath to help alleviate the soreness.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on how long your pain has been around and what your goals are. If you have chronic pain issues and/or you are preparing for an athletic competition or race, you'd likely benefit from cupping massage once a week for 4-6 weeks. After the initial period of treatment, you can start spacing the sessions out into maintenance treatments. Having regular sessions in the beginning spaced closer together helps us to re-educate your muscles and posture in order to create lasting change and keep you pain-free for longer.
