Is Massage Therapy Beneficial for Cancer Patients? What are the benefits of oncology massage?12/20/2023 There are many physical, mental and emotional challenges that cancer patients have to undergo. Depending on the type of cancer and how advanced it is, patients might have to get surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. At times, patients only have to undergo one treatment, but there are times when they might have to undergo a combination of them. These treatments also have a number of physical side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, pain, fatigue, infection, hair loss, swelling in the arms and legs and bowel problems. Apart from the physical side effects of cancer, patients also have to deal with mental and emotional challenges. Even just waiting for test results or waiting for the treatment to begin can take a toll on the cancer patient and their family. Additionally, there's the uncertainty of the outcome to deal with. Will the cancer go away permanently? Will it recur? Is it too advanced? The patient might feel numb, withdrawn, anxious and angry when they realize they have cancer. Their family members might also feel these emotions, to a lesser degree. Luckily, we are fortunate here in Jacksonville, Florida to have many world-class medical centers that specialize in cancer treatment, including Mayo Clinic, Baptist MD Anderson and the UF Health Proton Therapy Institute. Cancer and Massage Therapy When a patient is diagnosed with cancer, they can opt for massage therapy as a form of self-care. Oncology massage can't help cure cancer, but it can help patients cope with the side effects of cancer and the treatment to fight the cancer.
Types of Massage Therapy Appropriate for Cancer Patients There are different types of massage, so how do you choose the one that's right for you as a cancer patient? Here are some types of massage to consider: Lymphatic Drainage Massage Lymphatic fluid flows throughout the body, in the lymphatic system. It contains white blood cells which attack bacteria in the blood. The fluid is taken by the body to the lymph nodes where it is cleansed and sent back into the body. But there are times when lymph fluid might build up in the body, especially due to a cancer treatment in which the lymph nodes are removed. Lymphatic buildup occurs in 1 out of five patients with breast cancer. Lymphatic drainage massage performed by a licensed therapist can help cancer patients who have lymphatic buildup. You'll know that your lymphatic drainage massage is working because your swelling will reduce and your circulation will improve. Relaxation Massage This type of massage involves gentle rubbing and stroking on various parts of your body. It can give you a feeling of deep relaxation and wellbeing because it results in the release of endorphins i.e. "feel good" chemicals in the brain. It can also help to reduce swelling and inflammation, in addition to improving circulation and relieving soreness in your muscles. Plus, you'll find that relaxation massage helps you in dealing with stress. All of these benefits can help cancer patients deal with the physical and emotional challenges of cancer treatment. Acupuncture Of course, acupuncture is different from massage, but it is another therapy to consider if you are undergoing cancer treatment. With acupuncture, needles are inserted at acupoints. The patient might feel some heaviness, numbness or a tingling sensation. Several studies show that acupuncture can help cancer patients with the nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. A number of studies also show that acupuncture can help cancer patients with cancer pain, postoperative pain and muscle and joint pain. It can also help women receiving hormone therapy to deal with hot flashes. Other studies have shown the efficacy of acupuncture in dealing with fatigue, dry mouth, insomnia and anxiety. What to Expect With Massage Therapy As a cancer patient, you might have some reservations about undergoing Jacksonville, FL massage therapy. Given that you're probably in some degree of pain, you might be afraid that massage therapy is going to make that worse. But given that all the studies show an improvement in pain and better symptom management with massage therapy, it makes sense to give it a try. Massage is generally a very pleasant experience, with aromatherapy and soothing music. You'll be lying down on a massage table with an opening for your face. In some cases, if you've just had surgery and you can't lie on your stomach, you can also receive massage by lying on your side or sitting up. Your therapist will work with you to personalize the experience and make sure you are very comfortable. If you feel like you would prefer a gentler touch, you are free to tell the massage therapist to make the necessary adjustments. You should not feel pain during massage. Make sure you get up slowly after the massage so that you don't get lightheaded. With so many studies showing the benefits of oncology massage, it makes sense to call your doctor and find out if massage therapy is right for you. Designing a Stress-Relief Management Plan and How Massage Therapy Can Help You Manage Stress12/10/2023 Stress is something we all experience. Sometimes you can do something about the source. Other times, all you can do is manage your stress. Taking proper care of yourself helps preserve your health and supports a happy, less stressed life. How Does Stress Impact One's Life? Stress can have a variety of negative effects on your health, both physical and mental. When you are stressed, your brain's natural systems for perceiving a threat, such as an approaching car or a large dog, stay "turned on." This means your system has elevated levels of cortisol, which then increases your blood sugar and the availability of substances to repair tissues. This is, of course, to prepare you for running from the threat or fighting it...but in chronic stress, you stay in that fight or flight mode, because the threat or perceived threat never goes away. This increases your risk of mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, but can also impact your physical health. Stress can cause headaches, muscle-aches, digestive problems, weight gain, cognitive issues, and an increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. The mental effects of stress can also impact your productivity at work and your relationships with friends, family, and coworkers. People who are stressed can get "snippy" and irritable and are often less productive. Other people's reactions can then increase your stress. Why You Should be Proactive About a Stress Relief Self-Care Plan? Even if you are not stressed, you should be concerned about stress relief. Having a self-care plan in place before a stressor hits will help you ride with it and be ready to deal with increased stress. You should consider working with a therapist to help you develop a proactive coping plan to improve your resilience. You should spend time going through the things that make you particularly stressed and coming up with strategies, particularly if you are vulnerable to anticipatory stressors, which is stressing about things that haven't even happened yet. A proactive stress relief plan includes good nutrition, exercise (yoga can be particularly valuable), meditation, and establishing things that are healthy "I need this now" for stress. This might mean a relaxing video game, a good book, a bath with a colorful bath bomb, hanging out with your dog at the park, etc. You should also consider massage therapy. How Can Massage Therapy Be Part of a Stress Relief Plan, and What Are the Benefits? Massage therapy has been demonstrated to help with stress relief. Getting a massage from somebody you trust releases muscle tension and reduces your perception of threat. Massage can treat headaches and muscle aches that are caused by stress. You should tell your massage therapist you have elevated stress levels, or are concerned about them, so they can use targeted massage techniques for lowering stress. What Are Some Other Stress Relief Self-Care Tips? Some other things you can do to help reduce your stress include:
If you are feeling stressed, massage therapy can help. Regular massage therapy can add up, so if you are a Jacksonville, Florida resident, consider our wellness membership plan. This post is a continuation of our blog series about our unique massage enhancements at our clinic in Jacksonville, Florida that target pain and stress relief. Read on to learn about the benefits of ear seed therapy! Ear seeds are a form of auriculotherapy which is a type of acupressure treatment for the ear. Rather than puncturing the ear (as in acupuncture), ear acupressure uses seeds, generally from the Vaccaria plant, to put pressure on certain points in the ear. The seeds are attached to a piece of latex or a bandage with adhesive, so they stick to the ear at the pressure points and can be kept there for three to four days. Ear seeds can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including stress and pain. When added to your massage in Jacksonville, Florida, ear seeds can enhance the feeling of relaxation and well-being you experience during the massage. They'll also help to extend the feeling of calmness, relaxation and pain relief following the massage. What Are Ear Seeds Made Of? In general, ear seeds consist of a Vaccaria seed attached to an adhesive sticker. However, nowadays, ear seeds might be made of any of the following materials:
The adhesive sticker that the seed is attached to might be made of latex, cloth or some other type of tape. At our massage clinic in Jacksonville, Florida we tend to use the traditional Vaccaria seeds or stainless steel "seeds." What Conditions Can Be Treated With Ear Seeds? There are 120 pressure points in the ear, including the Shen Men which is also called the master point. By pressing down on different pressure points, ear seeds can treat several different conditions, such as the following:
In modern life, we suffer, on and off, from different types of pain as well as anxiety. Stress is also a normal part of our lives. However, a massage in Jacksonville, Florida, especially one that uses ear seeds, can be used to alleviate our pain, anxiety and stress. How Are Ear Seeds Used? When you ask for a massage with ear seeds, your massage therapist will go through the following application process:
Scientific Studies About Ear Seeds: There have been several scientific studies that prove the benefits of ear seeds.
Why Use Ear Seeds on the Shen Men Point? There are two Shen Men points on the body, as per Chinese philosophy. One is on the ear and one is on the wrist. The Shen Men point is also called the "spirit gate" or the "divine gate" because this is supposed to be where the gods enter and exit the human body. The Shen Men point is connected to the heart meridian which is one of the twelve meridians in the body through which "qi" or "ch'i" flows. As a result, it can help to calm your mind and your spirit which in turn leads to a lowering of anxiety. For an additional $15, you can receive an ear seed enhancement to your massage in Jacksonville, Florida. Read More About Red Light Therapy on Our Website - Learn about all of the amazing benefits of red light therapy in Jacksonville, Florida - from skin beautification to pain relief. Red light therapy is an excellent complement to our other healing modalities such as massage therapy and acupuncture. FAQ How often can I get red light therapy? It is safe and effective to do red light therapy daily. Will I get a tan or a sunburn? No, there is no UV light during the therapy, which is the light that turns skin dark/red. Do I need protective eyewear? Yes, it is recommended to keep your eyes closed during the session and wear some sort of protective eyewear. Please bring a pair of sunglasses, or you can borrow ours. What is a red light therapy session like? The red light therapy session lasts for 20 minutes total. It will consist of 10 minutes on the front of the body and 10 minutes on the back on the body. We have a standing full-body panel, so you will stand up during the treatment. It is recommended to be in the nude during the session, or wear undergarments. Having as much skin exposed to the red light as possible will help to make the treatment more effective. Should I have red light therapy before or after my massage or acupuncture appointment? It is up to you when to have your massage or acupuncture and your red light therapy session. Some people prefer it before and some prefer it after. Having red light therapy before a session has benefits in that is starts to increase circulation, so you are starting your massage off already with increased circulation. Doing red light therapy after a massage can help to ward off any post-massage soreness. Try both and see which you like best! ----- We are pleased to serve the following Florida communities with massage therapy, chiropractic, organic skincare, acupuncture, red light therapy and more: Jacksonville, Orange Park, Fleming Island, Mandarin, Jacksonville Beach, Nocatee, St Johns, Ponte Vedra and more.
