Are you giving birth soon in the Jacksonville, Florida area? Did you know that massage during labor and delivery can provide quite a few benefits for birthing women?

We are offering a class on Sunday, December 3rd at 6:15 pm for expecting couples (or a pregnant woman and their doula or other birth assistant) to learn easy massage techniques that can make labor easier on mom and baby. The class is $65 per couple and will last about an hour and 15 minutes.

Here are some of the benefits of massage during labor and delivery:

  1. Pain Relief: Massage can help alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with contractions and the various stages of labor. It may reduce tension in the muscles, making contractions more manageable.
  2. Stress Reduction: Massage promotes relaxation and can help reduce anxiety and stress during labor. It can also release endorphins, which are natural pain relievers and mood enhancers.
  3. Improved Blood Circulation: Massage can enhance blood circulation, which is beneficial during labor to ensure that the baby receives adequate oxygen and nutrients. Improved circulation can also help reduce swelling.
  4. Muscle Relaxation: Pregnancy often causes muscle tension, especially in the lower back, shoulders, and neck. Massage can help relax and relieve tension in these areas.
  5. Reduced Pain Medication Dependence: Some women find that regular massage during labor can reduce their reliance on pain medications or epidurals, providing a more natural pain management option.
  6. Increased Comfort: Massage techniques such as counterpressure and gentle touch can make the laboring woman feel more comfortable and supported throughout the process.
  7. Bonding: Massage can be a wonderful way for a partner or support person to actively participate in the labor experience. It can foster emotional connection and teamwork between the birthing mother and her support system.
  8. Shorter Labor: Some studies suggest that massage during labor may lead to shorter labor durations. While more research is needed in this area, shorter labor can be a significant benefit for the mother.
  9. Labor Progression: Certain massage techniques, like sacral pressure, may help with the progression of labor by encouraging the baby's descent and optimal positioning.

It is a good idea to consult with your ob-gyn or midwife and discuss your desire for massage during labor and delivery. Massage during labor is a very safe procedure for the vast majority of women, but since every woman and every pregnancy is unique, discuss it with your doctor,  midwife or doula.
